This particular example was acquired 10 years ago from Brazil and stands apart from many commonly encountered reproductions through its substantial weight, convincing scale, detailed representation of Nike and distinctive championship base. Its overall proportions and appearance closely follow those of football's legendary original trophy.

The unusual winners base is one of the most interesting characteristics of this particular example and formed an important part of our research into the piece. Despite the 1970 references incorporated into its design, we have found no sufficient evidence to describe it as a replica actually manufactured in 1970.

The Lost Jules Rimet Trophy

After Brazil won its third World Cup in 1970, the nation was allowed to keep the original Jules Rimet Trophy permanently. Just 13 years later, in December 1983, it was stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. The trophy was never recovered. It is widely believed to have been melted down, although its ultimate fate has never been conclusively established. Today, the disappearance of the original Jules Rimet remains one of football's greatest mysteries.
